GRAND PRIZE – Writer’s Digest

award 09
I just learned The Universe Builders: Bernie and the Putty won the GRAND PRIZE in the 2014 Writer’s Digest book contest, beating out every book in eight different categories.

Needless to say, I’m thrilled.

Writer’s Digest will do an interview with me in their May 2015 issue. Winning comes with other prizes, too, including a $3,000 cash award (on which Bernie has already claimed dibs).

I want to thank you for your support during the last year.  I began 2014 with an unpublished manuscript and went on to publish both an ebook and a print book that reached best seller status on Amazon in five categories.  We had lots of book signings and finished the year by winning the GRAND PRIZE in a major book contest.  I couldn’t have done it without you.

And for that, I offer my most sincere thanks.

Sincerely,

Steve LeBel

awards 01p.s. I’m very pleased with how Bernie has responded to his new-found fame.  He seems to be taking it all in stride.

p.p.s.  I received two interesting pieces of feedback from Writer’s Digest.  The first is an Editorial Review of the book, written after they awarded the Grand Prize.  The second is the actual rating and narrative from the first judge who read the book.  I found them very interesting and full of insight into how judging is done.

Top Rated Book!

This post has been updated.  Please click here.

Amazon has several ways to describe how a book is doing.

Sales, of course, is a big one.  But, honestly, it can be hard to complete with the big publishing companies that can push out thousands of books all over the country every time they push the ‘publish button’.

There is an interesting category on Amazon reserved for the books that have received Top Ratings by their readers.

And I found my book listed there.  And it’s doing VERY well!

My book, The Universe Builders, is listed in several categories on Amazon.  For example, it is listed in both Fantasy and Science Fiction.  Then Amazon has several sub-categories for both of those.  I found my book listed in three of them.

SCIENCE FICTION – SPACE OPERA

space opera - 24

Just to put this into perspective, if The Universe Builders is #24, what are some of the other books in the Amazon Top 100 List for Science Fiction – Space Opera list?  I was amazed by the books I found there:

Ender’s Game (Orson Scott Card) is #39. Star Wars (Timothy Zahn) is #43. A Princess of Mars (Edgar Rice Burroughs) is #54. The Chronicles of Pern (Ann McCaffrey) is #86. Childhood’s End (Arthur C. Clarke) is #100.

Hmm…

SCIENCE FICTION – METAPHYSICAL

metaphysical - 4

FANTASY – METAPHYSICAL

CUSTOMER RATING

How could my book be listed this high?  After all, I am competing with literally MILLIONS of books in the Amazon database.  According to one source, there are 12,000,000 books.  A staggering number.

Amazon’s rating system is rather simple.  They base their Top Rated rankings on something very simple:  customer ratings.  They compile the ratings of all the books in their database and then rank them against each other.

So how is it my book can be ranked above so many others?

There is only one answer:  It is because of YOU!  All the readers who have taken time to post your reviews on Amazon have given me an amazing 4.7 star average (out of 5.0 star maximum).

That is the reason I am ranking so VERY well.

Amazon 112 Reviews

For this, I thank you, my reviewers, VERY much!

Sincerely,

Steve LeBel

Barnes & Noble Book Signing

book sales and signingsI am very excited about the next of my book signing events (the fifth in the last three weeks).  We will be ending the year with a signing at the Barnes & Noble store in Muskegon, Michigan on Sunday, December 7th from 5-7 PM.  The store has already ordered a good supply of books just for this occasion.

I will be there with three good friends who are all authors.  Linda Watkins has written a supernatural thriller called Mateguas Island.  H. William Ruback has written an anthology of short stories and poems ranging from fantasy to fiction called the Short of It. J. Scott Payne will be there with his historical fiction novel called A Corporal No More.  You can learn more about all of their books at our publisher’s website www.ArgonPress.com.

book signingWe formed a writing co-op about a year ago to pool our talents and resources to get our books published.  This year, all five of us have published our first books.  This has been a fun experience for everyone, and the Barnes & Noble Book Signing is the perfect way to end the year.

Please join us for some fun conversation, buy a book or two, get them signed, and have some holiday fun.

I hope to see you there!

Hackley Library – Talk / Signing

hackley-1I am looking forward to talking about my book at the Hackley Library on Tuesday, November 25th, from 6-7 PM.

The book is a humorous fantasy about a young god who has just graduated from God School.  His biggest ambition now is to get a job working for The Business so he can become a professional Universe Builder, just like his father.

If only it was that easy…

Join us to hear about Steve LeBel’s new book.  It is already receiving top reviews on both Amazon and Goodreads.

Nine Things to Help a Friend Who Is a Writer

smile 1 1. Buy your friend’s book.   And, encourage your friends to buy it, too!

2. Give it as a gift. Give the book to friends and family. Don’t wait for the holidays; the sooner you buy, the more confidence you’ll inspire in your friend. Early sales generate more attention in the media and the public.

3. Recommend it to your friends. If you like the book, tell your friends. Tell everyone about it. Encourage them to buy it.

4. Review your friend’s book. Write a review about the book for Amazon.com, BN.com, GoodReads.com, Library Thing, and other reader social networks and book sales sites. Good reviews inspire others to buy your friend’s book.

5. Recommend your friend’s book to local librarians and local bookstores.  Encourage them to buy the book.  Let them know the book is by a local author. The more people ask about a book, the more likely the bookstore will stock it.  Suggest they invite your friend in for a book signing.

6. Recommend the book to your book group.  If you belong to a reading group, recommend your friend’s book as your choice for the next book to read.  If you know other local book groups, encourage them to select it.  If you know book groups in other cities, encourage them too.  Tell them know how to get in touch with the author to buy the book or to interview the author as part of their discussion.

smile 27. Tell your friend what you like about the book.  Provide support by telling your friend something you like about the book. Was it a good read? Did it move you to tears or laughter? Did you learn something new? Were you moved to take action?

8. Ask your friend how you can help.  You may have some talent, connection, specialized knowledge, etc. that might be just the thing they need.

9. Social network for/with your friend. Post that you liked it on Facebook. Tweet about it. Retweet his/her tweets. Engage in a conversation with him/her on Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+, or Twitter. Pin. Re-pin. Post. Share. Tweet. Retweet. Plus One. Like.
